Philosophy.  Travel teams are for players who have the desire and ability to play at a higher competitive level and for families that are willing to make a greater commitment to a longer and more demanding season that will include playing hockey at least four times per week over a six month-plus season from September to March. The goal is to develop fundamental individual hockey skills, execute team strategies and reinforce important attributes such as teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work and respect. DYHA will strive to develop teams that will successfully compete at the top of their respective Tiers.

Eligibility.  Travel teams are open to current DYHA members for the birth years listed in the Program Description above.  In addition, Travel teams may be open to a limited number of Non-registered players (formerly referred to as “Impact Players”) from outside of the DYHA program. For a detailed description of the Non-registered player process please refer to the Registration Information, Registration Overview tab or click here.

Try-outs.   PeeWee, Squirt and Mite Try-outs will take place in March, Midget, Bantam in April . Try-outs for the Girls  U-12 and U10 teams will take place in  March, U-19, U-14 in April. Exact dates will be posted under the Travel Tryouts Tab.

The Mite B team is a developmental team made up of second-year house Mites that have been recommended by their house coaches to try-out. These try-outs are well after the house season has begun. The team will have about 10 -15 practices and no more than 20 games in addition to the house schedule which takes priority. Try-outs for all other teams generally entail 3 – 5 sessions and are conducted by certified independent and DYHA coaches. Player selections are based on the appraisal of independent evaluators and potential team coaches over the course of the try-out sessions as well as, in most cases, written player evaluations completed by a travel player’s prior season coach. Coaches and evaluators will consider fundamental hockey skills, effort, teamwork, commitment and coachability exhibited in the try-outs and the previous season.

The Season.  The Travel Season generally runs from the beginning of September through the middle of March and usually includes 40-60 games per season. Most teams will not play during Thanksgiving or Christmas breaks, but will require players to participate in practices and games during the February break. There are usually two weeknight practices held at our “home rinks” in Darien or Stamford Twin Rinks, and two weekend games – one at home and one at an away rink usually in CT, but occasionally in NY or NJ. Team practices will be augmented by power skating sessions, goalie clinics and checking clinics (where appropriate). Some teams will also schedule dry-land training sessions at the beginning of a season. Travel teams also generally participate in at least three tournaments over the course of the season including, for many teams, Lake Placid, Providence RI, and the year-end State tournaments in CT.
