Program Description
The Mini Mite Program at DYHA is the exciting first step into the wonderful world of Youth Hockey. Mini Mite’s is a learn to play hockey program typically designed for 5 year-olds who have either had some instruction or are true hockey  beginners (this is not a learn to skate program).  Mini Mites are broken up alphabetically into two groups and each group will have one mid-week and one weekend practice.  The weekday/weekend practices will alternate between Thursday/Saturday and Friday/Sunday (all practices will be 45 minutes).  The emphasis during both sessions is on skating, fun, and developing the child’s love of the game!

Mid-Week sessions are coached by Blueline Sports Academy

What you can expect:

  • Blueline Sports Academy will teach the basics of skating and ice hockey skills by utilizing drills and fun/educational games

Weekend sessions are run by parent coach volunteers

(Parent volunteers are encouraged to help as much as possible)

What you can expect:

  • First half: Lessons learned during the week will be reemphasized (Ice will be split into 3 stations focusing on: Skating, Stick Handling, etc.)
  • Second half: Cross-Ice game play will be gradually introduced while progressing towards full time game play for the final 3 to 4 weeks.

Our programs are designed to work in tandem with each other from Mini-Mite (Skills progressing towards Cross Ice Games) to Mighty Mite (Cross-Ice games progressing towards 1/2 Ice Games) to Mite House (1/2 Ice Games progressing towards Full Ice Games).

Once a child has been accepted into the mini mite program, they are eligible to play in Mighty Mite then Mite House leagues the following years.

An informational meeting for Mini Mite volunteers & coaches will take place in September at Darien Ice Rink.  Additional info on this meeting will be sent out after Labor Day.
