DYHA is taking special precautions due to the approaching cold and influenza (flu) season. Although anyone can get the flu, it is most serious in the elderly, very young children, in people with chronic illnesses (such as lung disease, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes), or those with weakened immune systems. Influenza spreads easily in discharges from the nose and throat, usually when an infected person coughs or sneezes.   

 

According to the CDC website, signs and symptoms of flu include the following: fever or feeling feverish/chills; cough; sore throat; runny or stuffy nose; muscle or body aches; headaches; fatigue (very tired); and some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in young children than in adults. It is important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

We recommend that you do the following to help us prevent further spread of flu among our families:
 

  • Do not attend practices or games if you know you are sick.  Wait to until you have been without a fever for at least 24 hours (without the use of fever - reducing medication).
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing is a MUST. Wash your hands frequently using antibacterial soap or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Don't share water bottles during practices or games.
  • Players should bring their own water bottles to games and practices.
  • Run water bottles through the dishwasher after each use.
  • Keep gloves on at the end of the games on the handshake line.
  • Air dry all equipment after practices and games.
  • Please consider getting the flu vaccine. Most pharmacies offer flu vaccinations free of charge.
